Supplement facts panels will tell you basically everything you need to know about the product you are purchasing, or consuming. Knowing exactly how to read them is a completely different story. Ideally there are only two major sections. One section is made up of macronutrients and anything else with a recommended daily allowance (RDA) like vitamins and minerals. The other section is known as secondary ingredients, this would be any supplement ingredient that doesn’t have and RDA.

In regard to the secondary ingredient section, this is where your stimulants, your BCAAs, your creatine, or beta-alanine etc. should be listed. Beyond having your ingredients listed in the secondary ingredient section, you would want all of the ingredients listed with their individual dosages. If there is a group of ingredients listed with only one dosage that would be a proprietary blend, which as we have covered in a previous post, is something you want to avoid.

Early in this post I said ideally there should only be two sections to a supplement facts panel. However, on some products there will be ingredients listed below the secondary ingredients section, in the other ingredients section. This is another place companies will try to hide proprietary blends instead of having a fully transparent label.
